A Distinctive Flap
Prior to 1900, the Chicago River's polluted waters were contaminating Lake Michigan. But an unprecedented innovation would reverse the flow of the river, using both branches to send the waters inward and toward Chicago's Sanitary & Ship Canal. The Buckingham Bag honors this feat of engineering with a distinctive flap that commemorates one of Chicago's greatest achievements.
A Lost Art
Known as 'mattelasse', the stitched pattern (shown here) is applied to aged calfskin, imported from the Onda Verde tannery in Tuscany, Italy. The pattern combines two prominent side by side shapes. The round shape with protruding square corners is the outline of Chicago's Buckingham Fountain, from an aerial perspective. A cross-like shape subsequently emerges from the Buckingham outline, as the pattern is repeated.
THE BUCKINGHAM FOUNTAIN
Gifted to the city of Chicago in 1927 by Kate Sturges Buckingham, this majestic fountain is known as 'Chicago's Welcome Door'. With nearly 100 years of history behind it, Buckingham Fountain attracts visitors from all over the world. The distinctive shape of the fountain's basin is a signature icon of Chicago and the main inspiration behind Third Coast Chicago's collections, including our streetwear apparel, our jewelry and The Buckingham Bag.
